The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) is the international trade association for companies providing information destruction services.
NAID’s mission is to educate businesses, industry and government entities about the importance of destroying discarded information, promote the value of contract destruction services, and promote the standards and ethics of its member companies.
NAID has the only accepted third-party security certification program for information destruction operations. The program is an example of NAID’s continuing efforts to improve and promote the information destruction industry and, gain the wider recognition and acceptance that comes with it.
This is yet another way that NAID Members can set themselves apart as industry leaders!
The NAID Certification Program is voluntary to all NAID member companies. Through the program, NAID members may seek certification audits for mobile and/or plant-based operations in paper or printed media, micro media and, computer hard drive destruction or sanitation.
The NAID Certification Program establishes standards for a secure destruction process including such areas as:
- Operational security,
- Employee hiring and screening,
- The destruction process,
- Responsible disposal of destroyed materials, and
- Liability Insurance
Many banks, healthcare organizations, and government agencies are requiring businesses with NAID Certification. This trend is expected to continue as a growing customer base looks for ways to qualify information destruction contractors.
New applicants are required to submit the most current Certification Application and associated fees to NAID Headquarters. Once the application is determined to be complete, an auditor is assigned to the location to perform the initial audit. To maintain Certification, the most current Certification Application and associated fees must be submitted to NAID Headquarters on an annual basis. Recertification audits are conducted every other year, and must be successful in order for Certification to remain active.
Unannounced Audits are a possibility once an applicant has been approved.
All audits are performed by security professionals who have earned the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) accreditation, and the CPP accreditation is issued by the American Society for Industrial Security.
When a NAID Member has had a successful audit:
- They are issued a certificate, showing their company name, type of operations, and the specific media destruction performed at their location.
- The NAID Member is listed on the NAID website as certified.
Additionally, a NAID Certified Member is required to maintain a minimum amount of general liability insurance (umbrella or aggregate) of $2,000,000.
